Save on Cable Bill

My husband and I had finally had enough of the rising prices of our cable bill and decided to do something about it! Here’s how you too can save on your cable bill!

Call Your Cable Company

First we called and lowered our bill by getting rid of any cable “extras” and chose the lowest cable package which is $14.99/month. So we can still watch local channels for the news and CBS, ABC, NBC, etc.

We also got rid of our house phone, because really no one EVER called us on the house phone, everyone just calls our cell phones.

We lowered our internet to the lowest package that still allowed  to “stream” and be able to use the internet at the same time. This just means we couldn’t get the lowest package, because it wouldn’t allow us to use Netflix or Hulu Plus {which I will get to next}

Make sure to figure out what works best for your family. And make sure to call in, usually these companies will help “lower” your bill to keep you happy.

Utilize Streaming Services to Supplement

I will admit, I was more hesitant to lose our 100’s of channels of cable. I like watching reality tv, cooking shows, and other “guilty pleasures” that I thought I could only watch with cable.

Well I researched ‘streaming services’ such as Hulu Plus and Netflix and realized that Hulu Plus offers CURRENT seasons of the shows I watch! Yep! I would be missing a beat with most of the shows I currently love! And if Hulu Plus doesn’t have the current season, I can usually check out the shows website and watch full episodes right on there!

Now I will say that Hulu Plus is NOT children geared. There are hardly any children shows or movies that I could find on there.

But for the current seasons of the shows I love it is worth the $7.99 a month that I am paying. I just cut back three coffees a month and its paid for 😉

AND  if you want to check it out for FREE for 2 Weeks click here and check it out!

Now, my husband and I own a Wii, which at this time is NOT supported by HULU {is coming soon!}, so my husband wanted to sign up for Netflix for $7.99 month.  I was hesitant, and thinking it was overkill to have both Hulu and Netflix, but honestly now that we have tried both for a few weeks I am so glad to have Netflix!

Netflix has more children shows and movies then my two little boys have time for :) And there are even “newer” movies on there that we as a family hadn’t gotten a chance to watch yet.

And we can watch it right on our tv through our Wii with no problems what so ever! Even my darn 3 year old knows how to work the Netflix, probably better than me!

So overall I would say that having both for us still saves us a good amount of money over our cable bill and we aren’t looking back!

So I was asked to do I break down by numbers:

We were paying $250 a month for cable, telephone, and internet
Now we pay:  $15 for basic cable {local channels}, $44.95 for internet, $7.99 for Hulu and $7.99 for Netflix
So a total of  $76 for everything except our house phone, which we don’t need , that is a savings of  $174 , about a 70% savings!

Even if your cable bill is lower than ours you can still get it lowered!

What do you think, do you use Netflix or Hulu? What to lower your cable bill and give these options a go?

  1. I wondered if you’d mind breaking down the actual savings in numbers.

  3. My husband and I tried to lower out bill with Comcast, which has a monopoly on the cable service in our area. I tried everything. They gave me a “loyalty dept.” phone number. When we called, we were scoffed at and told there is no “loyalty dept.” After days of going back and forth and getting nowhere, we threatened to leave and get a different service (Dish Network or DirecTV) and Comcast was very quick to start the cancellation process. Of course we were only calling their bluff, so now we’re stuck with a $150 cable/internet bill and no other choice!

    • We have comcast too and literally have no other choice for internet. Verizon and att don’t offer internet where we live. That’s why we dropped all that we could and went with streaming.
