Make Your Own: Magic Shell Topping

  magicshell

This stuff is perfect for an ice cream topping but I also love to use it to dip strawberries in it as well! Easy to make and keeps well!

  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  1. In a microwave safe bowl, combine the ingredients.
  2. Microwave at 15 second intervals, stirring in between until melted (It took me about 45 seconds).
  3. Allow to sit at room temperature until serving over your ice cream or frozen yogurt.
  4. Store in an airtight container in your pantry. Do not put it in the fridge or freezer, it will harden.

Servings: 1 cup of magic shell

{Thanks Chocolate & Carrots!}

After making a big batch of this you could always freeze individual portions for easy lunches or snacks!

Make Your Own: Sweetened Condensed Milk

make your own series Have you ever thought about making items that you normally would just buy at the grocery store? Making your own of some items can

  1. Be cost effective and save you money {sometimes}
  2. Be healthier and/or organic if you choose, with no preservatives or unknown ingredients
  3. You can control what items go into the recipe, so you can swap items for preference or allergy
  4. Sometimes you need an item in a recipe and find out you are out..being able to make the same item can save your recipe :)

I am going to start bringing you items I am attempting to make myself over the store bought or pre-made version. I will try to break it down in price so you can compare the two. Hopefully some of the items I make myself will be cheaper, but overall I would like to start so I am using less preservatives in the meals I make.

Make Sweetened Condensed Milk with Whole Milk

You can also use real milk and sugar. Just combine 2 cups milk with 1/2 cup sugar bring to a boil over medium heat, reduce and cook on low for 2 hours. The mixture should be barely simmering and never bubbling at any point. Stir every 15 minutes or so to keep the milk from forming the “skin” on top. After two hours add 1/2 tablespoon of butter, and let cool. Will thicken once cooled. {Thanks Just As Delish!}

I plan on using this in my Make Your Own: Coffee Creamer recipe that I will share later!
